A LITERARY FAMILY
Janeâs brothers were growing up. Her younger brother, Charles, was still at home and receiving his education from their father. Francis, Janeâs adventurous brother, finished his training at the Royal Naval Academy. At 14, in 1788, he sailed for the East Indies aboard the HMS Perseverance as a volunteer. Among his private possessions, he carried a letter written to him by his father. This letter offered spiritual guidance, moral advice, and fatherly affection to the lad. Francis kept this cherished paper with him until he died.
Edward, Janeâs fortunate brother, traveled for several years through Europe on a grand tour. Well-to-do young men were sent on these tours to expose them to polished society, current world culture, and famous historic sites. Like an explorer discovering new land in the name of the king, eighteen-year-old Edward hiked the Alps in Switzerland, toured magnificent palaces in Italy, and boated through canals in Amsterdam.
Janeâs eldest brother, James, along with her favorite brother, Henry, were both at St. Johnâs College in Oxford. Henry was a student. James had graduated and stayed on as a teacher. These brothers decided to publish a magazine that âoffered to the world as a ârough, but not entirely inaccurate Sketch of the Character, the Manners, and the Amusements of Oxford, at the close of the eighteenth century.ââ They called it the Loiterer.
Jane continued to write. Romance and friendship were two frequent themes. In Georgian England, popular novels made ridiculous claims about making friends or falling in love. The characters werenât realistic. The plots were outrageous. Jane decided to mock this popular literary trend. She wrote in a literary form known as burlesque, using comedy and silly exaggeration to make fun of popular novels. She also experimented with developing her own witty voice, creating unique characters, and inventing complicated plot twists.
